When I arrived in Leiden I'd survived to find I was finally getting older
They emptied out the canals during international wars and they filled them up with soldiers
the roosters that top church spires inspired their performance and
I don't know why they now are lying dormant until the morning
All the gulls that line shores of northern seas are trying to get to England and sometimes on the clearest days you can see right across the smoke from chimneys
the statues at Nordwiejke may seem quite progressive and
I don't know why to me they seem suggestive to some direction
For when you go to see a show in Utrecht the beer costs only duppies
the girl who's there she sings so effortlessly has a voice thats from the movies and every city block holds a band inside it and
I don't know why we never thought to try that
we just stayed quiet
To learn somehow what I know now could fill this town
Enlightened in Leiden
For when you walk with feet on top of cobblestones were laid from tiny islands
the spiral stairs of Pieterskerk go winding up and pull you into violence
like the slavery that constructed this building and
I don't know why today we feel like children who still are willing
To learn somehow what I know know could fill this town
Enlightened in Leiden
